Challenges for 2011

I have decided to make a several resolutions for 2011.  The first one I want to share and be accountable to here. I am deep cleaning and organizing the closets, shelves and spaces. It was made perfectly clear that last December after my FIL died. We couldn't find pictures, important documents and files. My closets are dusty and cluttered. I knew that but now I KNOW it. I need to do something about it.

After living in the same house for 10 years, I have accumulated some things. I have sorted and tossed over the years but the accumulation outpaces the tossing. I have decided to redecorate and make things much simpler.

I had a Victoriana taste when I moved here 10 years ago. Now I want a more modern meets traditional fusion. I live in a 100 year old home but I think this can be accomplished. I have purchased a few modern accessories. Now the challenge.

I am going to take photos of problem areas. You will see a before and after when I have finished. I am hoping to do one room a month. Yes a month, because I am going to do a lot of things that are not noticeable on the surface. I am finding photos show me things I don't see when I am looking at it in person. I live in a 8 room house with 2 enclosed porches and a basement. All need organizing. I am not going to paint this year just tidy up. I am planning on doing this work in 20 minutes increments 3-4 times a week. The home office/music room is first. I have been working on it all month. Hopefully by Feb first it will be photo ready.

I'm excited to see your before and after pics. This type of thing always gives me ideas on how I can make more home more efficient and attractive.

Way to go mom! It always helps me to keep things organized by putting in a system to keep it going. For example, mail is a problem for us. It kind of got put in random places and never really got sorted. Now we have an "in" box next to Brad's desk where the mail goes after I have looked at it. If it's in there Brad is free to toss/keep as he sees fit.

oh, of course those systems only work if you actually use them. lol.

Good for you Vicki! Hopefully your sharing will give the rest of us unorganizers (me) a kick in the rear to work on this. I like LadyLiz's idea about mail. I usually dump it on the dining room table.

Congrats on the weight loss. I have a few pounds to lose also sure wish it would happen. You asked for peoples advice on a lot of things here's my help. I'm not an expert but hope it helps a little. Here is a great blog she is organizing her house.http://abowlfulloflemons.blogspot.com/ It's called a bowl full of lemons. For organizing try to get all things alike or things you use together in the same room/closet if possible. If all your pictures are in the same closet or box you know wear to start looking for a single one. For decorating I find a picture or 2 of a room I like. Then when I'm shopping I decide if what I'm buying would fit in the picture. For clothing I really look at the item and think if my friend Chris would wear it or laugh at me for wearing something like that. She has good tast in clothes. Good luck!!
